Surveying and Geomatics Engineering

The shape and size of the earth, maps and images used in national defense and economic development, location of construction projects, land data, land use, and air and sea navigation are all dependent on surveying. Surveying engineering, in all its different forms, is an important part of our lives. Recent developments in GPS, GIS and remote sensing technologies suggests that surveying engineering is increasingly important than. National projects of surveying are promoted by Ministry of the Interior (http://www.land.moi.gov.tw) and  the National Land Surveying and Mapping Center  (http://www.nlsc.gov.tw).

Graduate courses in surveying and geomatics include Physical Geodesy, Advanced Engineering Surveying, Global Positioning System, Geographic Information System Analysis, and Remote Sensing. Undergraduate courses include Surveying, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Statistic Adjustment, and Geodetic Surveying.  Advances in satellite technology, such as global positioning system, satellite and terrestrial gravimetry, and remote sensing, have progressed so rapidly that the integration of research in geographic information system, global positioning system, and remote sensing poses as both an interesting challenge and necessary development in the future.

Surveying has become increasingly an invaluable source of information for national defense and economic development. Location-based service (LSB) is common today and it requires data collected using surveying technology. With recent introduction of the European Galileo system and other Global navigation and satellite systems (GNSS), a revolution in acquiring spatial information (GNSS) has arrived.  Supporting orbit determination and remote sensing research using Taiwan’s satellite data will be also an important part of the surveying and geomatics program. With the development of modern information systems, awareness in optimizing resources, establishment of satellite receiving stations, promotion of the satellite development plan and geography information system, improvement of related technology, and stimuli from the construction of various public works in Taiwan, the importance of surveying engineering can not be underestimated.
